During our visit to the Higher Institute of Technology and Applied Sciences we gathered detailed information about its relations with Shaam exposition since the very beginning.
The institute has strong relation with the Syrian Computer Society (SCS) which is the main organizer of the exposition.
"Most of the exposition's founders and organizers have either graduated from the institute or have connection with it in a way or another", said Dr. Iyad Sayyed Darwish, Director of the Institute's Publications and the Press and Scientific Cooperation Directorate at SCS.
Due to this fact, the institute's participation in Shaamexpo, as Dr. Darwish says, is "definite" and a necessity as ICT has been spread in Syria in all sectors.
"Our participation in Shaam exposition is definite for two chief reasons: Firstly, we have strong ties with (SCS)… secondly, the institute was the first party to rehabilitate ICT engineers since 1983", Dr. Darwish added.
The institute contains a scientific laboratory that develops ICT products and services to be shown in Shaam exposition.
"The institute's students intensify their efforts to complete some projects before holding the event to be shown there", the director said.
He affirmed that the exposition is an opportunity to introduce the institute's R&D products even if they are not adopted or deals are not reached.
"The products are graduation projects that could be carried out on the ground", Dr. Darwish said, noting that one of the projects has dealt with computerizing production lines to attract those who are interested in "software" industry including state institutions and industrialists.
In this context, Dr. Darwish sees the exposition as an opportunity to make distance between academy and industry shorter.
On the other hand, the director gave us a full idea about the history of Shaam exposition and its development throughout the past years.
The 1st session of Shaam exposition was mounted in 1996 where governmental institutions and companies, and states’ ministers as well as public sector took part.
However, today, ICT sector has remarkably developed besides the increase of private companies and foreign companies' investments in Syria.
Dr. Darwish stressed the importance of the institute's participation in the exposition to build bridges between ICT companies, and to pay attention to advertisement which became a necessity under the huge competition in ICT field.
"We mainly pay attention to Arabic language applications and its developments including dictionary and morphology", the director said, adding that a deal was signed with king Abdullah’s city for Sciences regarding a project to form Arabic language speech recognition application system.
"We are also interested in applications of computerization and robots, and we are keen on not to repeat such projects", Dr. Darwish said.
He added: "The institute presents, for the first time, a new approach in formulating curriculum of e-learning to help students and to broaden their scientific horizons".
"Previously, the institute presented a project for generating electricity through solar power. And it would present possibility of controlling electricity by mobile", the director said.
He concluded his speech by saying: "Our institute encourages people to carry out cooperation projects with Europeans, and shows medical devices' applications such as a device for measuring blood sugar through a computer system".
In fact, the institute is a window for cooperation with the European Union. It is a national reference for cooperation projects with the EU within the framework of development and researches.
